David De Gea has followed up his Man of the Match
performance against Norwich City by winning Manchester United's Player
of the Month award for February 2012.
The four-week
period of fixtures began at Stamford Bridge - where the Spaniard pulled
off some world-class saves to preserve a precious point - and culminated
with him keeping the Canaries largely at bay before Ryan Giggs snatched the winner.
Such
efforts helped the goalkeeper to glean 45 per cent of the votes cast on
the club's seven official websites. Speaking exclusively to ManUtd.com
on Friday, De Gea said: "It’s great news and it’s special to know it’s
our own fans who have voted – it shows there’s a nice understanding and
feeling between me and them.
"It’s proof that I’m doing something right and it's fantastic that the fans have recognised this."
Some of United's outfield players have endorsed the poll's outcome. Michael Carrick told
ManUtd.com: "David has been really good. His performance at Chelsea
springs to mind - what a save that was from the free-kick [by Juan
Mata]. If we'd lost that game, it could realy have knocked the stuffing
out of us.
"He’s made some huge saves at crucial times and that’s
what great goalkeepers do. They make the big saves when they're needed
and that’s what David has done. He’s stepped up and has been terrific."
One
of the award runners-up would agree with Carrick. Paul Scholes, who
finished third behind De Gea and also Javier Hernandez, told MUTV after the Norwich game : "David was great. He made some great saves, came out for crosses and held on to
